The Jacki Headley University Art Gallery is pleased to present Two Truths & A Lie, a photography-based exhibition featuring the work of famed tabloid photographer Weegee (Arthur H. Fellig, 1899-1968) and contemporary artists Zoe Crosher and Jessamyn Lovell.

Two Truths & A Lie explores the shift in photography’s role as the arbiter of fact. How do we discern what is “truthful” when the utter saturation of images we experience daily has blurred the lines between fictive and documentary? As photography has moved from a journalistic endeavor into the realm of fine arts, artists have increasingly embraced the slippage between reality and fiction. Wherein lies the truth of an image? In its representation? In its interpretation? Is a photograph less authentic if staged? Does a documentary photograph reveal only one truth?

Situating Crosher and Lovell’s work within a photography lineage, Weegee’s images provide the critical framework to explore themes of surveillance, the variability of the documentary photograph, and the blending of truth and fiction. The exhibit will present some of Weegee’s most iconic photographs from the 1930s and 40s, which include his stark images of murder scenes, fires, and mayhem bystanders.

Jessamyn Lovell’s series “Dear Erin Hart,” details the artist’s personal pursuit to find the woman who stole her identity. From police documents to surveillance photographs, where the artist slips from victim to private investigator, the series pushes the boundaries of privacy and the construction of identity.

Similarly, Zoe Crosher’s ongoing “Michelle duBois Project,” is an endless re-contextualization of an archive of auto-portraits by an amateur photographer, fictionally named Michelle duBois. Through its various iterations, Crosher asserts the impossibility of the biopic, where the ubiquity of duBois’s own image ultimately obscures her true self.

Two Truths & A Lie is curated by Kelly Lindner, Director of the Jacki Headley University Art Gallery and photographer and curator Jason Tannen.

The exhibition is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.
